Writing for “exposure” almost never works.

rachelhills:

Not least because the publications offering fledgling writers exposure in lieu of payment generally aren’t read by anyone with the power or inclination to hire you.

What can work is writing to build your portfolio. Take the unpaid gigs when you need to, but make sure you knock the work out of the park.

Then, when you’re applying/pitching for paid work, show them those assignments to prove to them that if they do hire you, you’ll do the same for them.

Writing for love also works: because you love what the publisher stands for, you want to create something awesome with your friends, or you want to do a friend a favour.

But the publishers that offer writers genuinely good exposure? Are almost always publications that pay their writers a respectable wage. Or something approaching it, if they’re small and indie.

My artwork stolen by Lendl (Dale) Romero

feanne:

The winning design as shown on this page (under “Partner Prize”):

It’s already being sold as a t-shirt here :(

My 2007 drawing originally posted in my deviantart gallery:

I have a feeling that texture on the moon was stolen from one of these drawings too…

I have already sent an email addressed to international@graniph.com to report the copyright infringement.

I also wanted to email Grafik mag, the partner that selected Romero as a winner for the Graniph contest, but couldn’t find an email address on their website. :\

What else can I do? :( WHO IS THIS ROMERO GUY ANYWAY?! Wow! You know I’m pretty liberal with my artworks, I don’t mind if people take them and use them for personal stuff like tattoos or school projects or whatever, and anyway most people are nice and sensible enough to give me credit for my work and to not make money off of my work. And it’s just really stupid to copy the whole element like that when the style is so distinct!

EDIT: Wow, I found two more designs of his that he ripped off my work. I have to sleep now so I will post about those tomorrow. I am CERTAIN that he is stealing from lots of other artists too.

WOW, PEOPLE ARE HORRIBLE.

Smile Friday! Gross untrimmed, 2-day-old unwashed hair + eyebags from staying up too late (actually working).
Sometimes it feels like work won’t ever get done, no matter how much I do, but it’s OK. I like working more than not doing anything. So, bring it on, work.
Only, in trickles not in avalanches, please.

In this picture, you can see:
our kitchen
our dining room
our living room
coffee brewing
my Steven Segal hair
I’ve been sitting in this chair for nine hours, toiling away because I have been a graduate for two years and I guess this is what comes after school.

So this is what it feels like to be ripped off. At least change the colors, James Templeton.

Funnily enough, you brought me to you:

I took this post down yesterday because I decided to confront James Templeton first. I found out that he was hotlinking my CSS and JS files (!!!) so I renamed my stylesheet and his site was unstyled for a while.

But then, he just uploaded his “own” stylesheet, BUT he didn’t reply, so now I’m going to have to make an angry post, I guess.

I’m mad because I worked really hard on this layout, coding it from a bare-bones theme (see here), and we are both designers by profession and my email was nice and polite and explained why I wanted him to take down his stolen layout. And he flat out ignores it and uploads a different CSS.

Currently, he’s still linking to some of my files. It’s pretty upsetting.

Managed to find the time and energy to clear away the crap pile on my desk* so now I am back to working in my room. It feels nice/like I am school/like I’m back to being productive.
Behind me, you can see the other side of my bookshelf, my The National print from when they played in Singapore, something by Val Chua, and a collab with my dad.
Not seen in this picture is the rest of my mess of a room that I share with my sister.
———* It is now a crap pile on my bed.

Taking a break from work! (When I’m on a roll, I’m on a roll.) I haven’t done these in a while, and I kind of missed using my tablet.
I feel like I’m losing all the time, and one of the things that help me out is saying this over and over, and Explosions in the Sky playing in my head.
Strangely enough.
