i really dislike people who diss twilight.

paperbuildings / thiswonderland / sheldoncooper- / trueloveonlyexistsinfairytales:

unless you have written one of the most powerful love stories in the world, you have no opinion on it and you have absolutely no right to judge it when you havn’t even read the books / watched the films whatever. i don’t see you with a fucking multi billion dollar best seller, so sit the fuck down.

“one of the most powerful love stories in the world”

I’ve read the first three books and half of the fourth. Can I say it’s shitty? Because it is. I’ll attribute that time in my life to temporary insanity. It’s terribly written and sends an awful message to the young girls who read it. It displays an abusive relationship and calls it true love. It’s a story about unhealthy obsession. It says that life isn’t worth living unless you have a boyfriend, that if you get a boyfriend and he leaves you, you may as well just kill yourself. It shows a girl who cooks and cleans for the men in her life, with her interests never really going beyond that. I don’t want my 13 and 15 year old nieces to learn this. I don’t want them to think that it’s okay for a boy to sneak into their fucking house  and watch them sleep without their permission. I don’t want them to think it’s okay for a man to keep them from seeing their family or friends. I don’t want them to think sex is some sort of evil, immoral act that’s going to damn them for all eternity. Okay, so they’re my nieces and I prefer them to not think about sex at all BUT I KNOW THAT’S NOT REALISTIC AND I DON’T WANT THEIR VIEWS ON IT TO BE UNHEALTHY AND DEMONIZED. Also, I don’t want them to think they can’t tell me, or their mom, or other trustworthy adults in their life things. Bella keeps EVERYTHING from her father, and I think that’s terrible. I don’t want my nieces, or other girls, to aspire to be Bella Swan.

Yeah, this ended up being longer than I intended, but I just feel the need to put my feelings on this subject out there. Some more.

(Also, the shift key is not just a decoration.)

Dear OP,

Dear Josh,
Four four you!

Dear Everyone Else,
Here is a link to a nice summation as to why I hate Twilight. It’s an excerpt from ‘Mark Reads Twilight’ on Buzznet. I’d post a rant-filled tirade, but it probably won’t be as smart, as I just woke up and haven’t had my coffee yet.

Love,
Carina

The girl who threw the puppies is in jail.

Thank god. I hope she gets her ass kicked in there, not gonna lie.

What? No. This is a picture of Alyssa Bustamante. The girl who killed the nine-year-old last year “just to see what it felt like.” I think she is also in jail now.
I hope the puppy-thrower is in jail, though, regardless of whose face has been going around Tumblr.
It’s also kind of sad that I know these things. I think I probably spend too much time on the internet.

ReadMore
If you’re a voracious reader or a self-styled book blogger (read: me), you’ll definitely find ReadMore, a reading log iPhone application, very useful. Being a reading log of sorts, ReadMore is designed to maintain a record of your reading habits, a list of your currently-reading, read and to-be-read books, and other pieces of information that are relevant to your vice of choice.
Read the rest of Aldrin’s thorough review.

Bought this app Like A Baws, because I am Gullible. I’m squatting on my mom’s iPhone until I can get my hands on the iPhone 4 (if that even happens), but so far so good. It’s so nifty.

Cute band crush: Pavement

1. Is there anyone dreamier than Stephen Malkmus in this video?

2. I just read “Love is a Mix Tape” and I desperately need to fall in love with someone while listening to Pavement. But who doesn’t?

3. Why does Nickelback exist? This obviously has nothing to do with Pavement or cute bands or talent in general. It’s just the question that drives me.

I fell in love with someone who listened to Pavement once.

I fell in love with Stephen Malkmus once. Also, that book is amazing.

Everybody Wants To Rock The World

philstarsupreme:

World domination seems imminent, and it starts gently in Singapore. Local indie bands Us-2 Evil-0, Arigato, Hato! and The Bernadettes are playing in Singapore’s Esplanade on July 30 and 31.

This week, Supreme sits down with supergroup Us-2 Evil-0 and indie upstarts Arigato, Hato! to discuss muse, music, and the battle between good and evil.

So, Tumblr was down yesterday, and I was freaking out because my blog was also down, which resulted into Facebook and Twitter abuse. But anyway.

Petra and I wrote articles for Star yesterday. She wrote about Arigato, Hato! and then I wrote about Us-2 Evil-0, both of whom are going to Singapore, and I suppose what you should really do right now is read them, because if I do say so myself, they’re pretty good. But that’s just me.

(Just kidding they’re pretty good.)

To the girl at the table near the back of the library -

I almost asked you what was wrong the first time I saw you crying. Then I saw the book you were reading, and realized that you were crying because of it. And I was interested, because I’d never read anything that moved me that much.

I checked out the book you were reading, and guess what? I cried - just a little - too. That’s how it started. Every time I go to the library, you’re almost always there, usually with a completely new book. Sometimes you smile, or laugh out loud, or cry again, and when you do, I check out the book you’re reading.

That was it, really, until I realized how gorgeous you are. You’re not pretty in the normal kind of way, but god, when you smile, it lights up your face in the best way.

I wish you’d notice me, sitting a few tables away from you, reading the book you were reading a few days ago. I wish you’d smile at me. I don’t have the guts to talk to you. I’m afraid you won’t be anything at all like I imagine.

One of these days, I’ll work up the courage and I’ll ask you about what you’re reading. And maybe you’ll smile that gorgeous smile and tell me all about it, and then we’ll talk about all the books we’ve read. But until then, thank you for the book recommendations. I love them.

Love, the boy a few tables away from yours

Looking for Alaska by John Green
For a young-adult novel that’s supposedly a big hit, both critically and commercially, John Green’s Looking for Alaska was really hard to find, at least for the last three months or so. Never in my countless metro-wide peregrinations from one bookstore to another during that period did I come upon a single copy of the book. It wasn’t until five Thursdays ago that I finally got my copy, and even that I had to pre-order through a local bookstore’s online facility eight weeks prior. About time, I thought, as I had been looking forward to discovering what the hype—which includes, but is not limited to, Carina’s persistent recommendation and an out-of-nowhere Twitter @reply from someone I don’t know saying it’s really a great book—is all about.
Looking for Looking for Alaska proved long and arduous, yes, but reading it was quite the opposite. Seemingly a cross between The Catcher in the Rye and The Perks of Being a Wallflower in terms of tone and characterization, it was a departure from my usual, pleasant trips to the often paranoid and labyrinthine worlds of postmodernist literature and science fiction, but it felt like something I didn’t realize I’d been needing, like a breath of fresh air or a nice back rub. It reminded me why I keep coming back to young-adult fiction in the first place even though I, now in my twenties, had retired myself from the literary category’s demographic age bracket a long time ago: its often-kept promise of an abundance of profundity but with a paucity of pretentiousness.
In just four and a half hours scattered over two otherwise drowsy days, I read Looking for Alaska. More than that, I fell in love with it, almost as deeply as the novel’s narrator and protagonist, the Famous Last Words-loving, The Great Perhaps-seeking Miles “Pudge” Halter, fell in love with the apparently missing title character, the beautiful and mercurial Alaska Young. Green’s prose, while engaging and compulsively readable, is a little rough around the edges. What stays with you instead long after you finish the novel is the uncanny way his words, albeit muddled, coalesce, compelling you to stop for a second and think and breathe and sigh and ask yourself important questions you thought you’d never come across again after passing your high school religion and values education subjects, questions you thought you’d have clear-cut answers to by the time you reach a certain age, say, 25.
I’m now five months shy of my twenty-fifth birthday, but such questions of life and death, of love and anger, of guilt and forgiveness, and of other opposing abstract heavyweights, still have me stumped. Looking for Alaska gradually brought me to the realization that perhaps at my present age I am not still in search of my own Great Perhaps so much as just about to embark in one.

Just putting this here. I love this review of this book that I love. (Emphasis mine.)
Also, you definitely should follow Aldrin. I mean, I’m just saying.
