You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates

So yeah, we just watched the dance montage from 500 Days of Summer at my office. And I was totally swaying and snapping while we grinned and talked about how the movie just never never gets old. How I watched it twice on a single transatlantic flight and would have watched it again if I’d had the time. How I watched it first in the theater in a sad summer and cried in the dark (though I didn’t tell my co-workers this part) and will love it forever even if you lecture me for an hour on how it is over-stylized and precious. I won’t ever care. Happy Friday, love birds and lovelorn alike!

I said it earlier this week, but I’ll say it again: someone needs to make me a Hall & Oates mix.

(500) Days of Dull Characters Being All Hipster-yby Francis Cabal
(500) Days Of Summer (2009)D: Marc WebbS: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel
When I first heard about this film, I already knew it was going to suck. And I was not alone. A couple of my friends and I already wrote it off as “hipster garbage” even before the film was finished. So when it was finally shown here, I decided to go watch it since I didn’t want to hate on something just for the sake of hating it. A matter of principle, I guess; I don’t know. And besides, I like to be proven wrong once in a while. Turns out, I was right. It was indeed nothing but poorly executed tripe.

In the middle of Hate Week over at Pelikula right now. Francis wrote a review on (500) Days of Summer. It’s not excessively scathing, and I do agree to an extent. But here is a review I wrote in October 2009 (Nothing Spaces: clickety), in which I said that I liked it.
It’s a terribly flawed film, but I did enjoy it. Some parts were kind of too contrived, and there were a lot of cheap shots at humor (i.e. Autumn? Really? My brother also did not like “breaking the fourth wall” where Tom gestures to the audience). I think I didn’t like it mostly because it was irritating how many Easter eggs there were in the film, and how they were making it obvious, as opposed to little “treats” people discover. They shove too many references in your face… This picture, for example, has JGL with a slightly puffed out chest to highlight that Joy Division shirt. At least, that’s what it comes off to me.
One of my favorite films, High Fidelity, which Francis mentions in his review as well, does a lot of reference-throwing, and I don’t know why, but it doesn’t really come off as trying too hard. Unlike how it comes off in this film.
As a(n unqualified) critic, I don’t think this is a great movie. As a moviegoer, however, I did enjoy it on some level. I appreciated a lot of its elements, and I felt both like a Tom (lonely wallower that people always leave) and a Summer (Satan in a cardigan). So, there. It’s not one of my favorite movies, but I don’t hate it.
/end blather.

There’s only two kinds of people in the world. There’s women, and there’s men. Summer Finn was a woman. Height: average. Weight: average. Shoe Size: slightly above average. For all intents and purposes, Summer Finn: just another girl. Except she wasn’t. To wit, in 1998, Summer quoted a song by the Scottish band Belle & Sebastian in her high school yearbook. “Color my life with the chaos of trouble…” The spike in Michigan sells of their album “The Boy with the Arab Strap” continues to puzzle industry analysts. Summer’s employment at the daily freeze during the summer of her sophomore year coincided with an inexplicable 212% increase in revenue. Every apartment Summer rented at an average rate of 9.2% below market value, and her roundtrip commute to work averaged 18.4 double-takes per day. It was a rare quality, this “Summer effect.” Rare, yet something every post-adolescent male has encountered at least once in their lives. For Tom Hanson to find it now in a city of 400,00 offices, 91,000 commercial buildings, and 3.8 million people, well that could only be explained by one thing: fate.

Lloyd Dobler Syndrome.

“The thing is, ladies, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character exists in the real world; he just doesn’t look like Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

In fact I have a guy friend who basically is Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character. But he’s like 8 feet tall, kind of chubby, and doesn’t wear argyle sweaters. So he’s basically screwed. Because all around him his female friends are bemoaning the lack of men as sweet and understanding as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character when he wants to shout, “BITCHES I’M RIGHT HERE” but he never would, exactly BECAUSE he is as sweet and understated as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character.” (Read the entire post.)

Akshilly, me mali pa nga sa 500 Days of Summer eh.

gtfomom:

Nung pinatugtog ni Tom yung “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” album art ng The Queen Is Dead yung lumabas. ESKYUSMI, nasa Hatful of Hollow ang kantang yon.

Does this make me a music snob nao?

Internet tough guy?

No? No? Damnit!

Sabi ng kuya ko, Louder Than Bombs daw yung nasa 500 Days of Summer. Nandun yung “Please, Please, Please…”
