Style Week: An Introduction
by Jay Santiago“Have you ever wondered if there was more to life, other than being really, really, ridiculously good looking?” muses Ben Stiller’s zany catwalk-stomping creation in the 2001 cult classic Zoolander, lampooning the fashion world with its depiction of male models as vapid drones whose limited brain capacity makes them malleable pawns for carrying out assassination plots. It’s a fitting reflection in a film that is intentionally more about style than substance, taking audiences on a candy-colored, neon-lit amusement ride where haute couture meets madcap comic strip.
Since September has become synonymous with a focus on the elements of style, we shift the spotlight from our “regular” film features to cinematic creations that we have found intrinsically captivating, dazzling visual feasts that fully realize the significance of this powerfully moving medium that we are all so fixated with.
While the movies we feature this week may all be “really, really, ridiculously good looking”, it is our firm belief that each are prime examples of how there is so much more to discover beneath the surface of things.
